If you prefer history than a visit to Bear Butte State Park, Ft. Meade, and the Cavalry Museum should be on your trip "to do" list.  Sturgis' roots go back to 1878, and named for Colonel Samuel D. Sturgis, the commander of Fort Meade Cavalry Post.   Soldiers from the 4th, 7th, and 10th Cavalry have been stationed at this historic frontier fort, which was established to protect new settlements in the northern Black Hills.  The Star Spangled Banner was part of the evening military retreat ceremony at Fort Meade in 1892, long before it became our National Anthem.  The Ft. Meade Cavalry Museum has preserved frontier history for this western South Dakota community.

Bear Butte State Park, six miles northeast of Sturgis, provides visitors an opportunity to view buffalo, hike to the top where the first trailhead for the 111-mile Centennial Trail begins and  winds through the Black Hills
